FLAT EARTH FILM FESTIVAL

Dates: February 9-13th 2020

Venue: Herðubreið Cinema,

The fourth annual Flat Earth Film Festival (FEFF) will take place across five days at Herðubreið Community and Culture Center in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland forming part of the busy, exciting atmosphere generated
by List í Ljósi. This dynamic festival pairing attracts international visitors and participants to experience a week-long program of free exhibitions, international films, outdoor performances, illuminated sculptures, panels, and events.

FEFF’s objective is to make independent cinema more accessible to the world. The festival exists in response
to this environment which faces grave uncertainty in the imminence of climate change. FEFF’s film curation
discusses the effects these changes impose on our communities and relationships in the 21st century. The
festival showcases independent films from Iceland, USA, and the rest of the world, all of which offer a diverse range of insights on many of today’s most pressing environmental and cultural topics. Each day features an average of ten carefully paired films back-to-back, from a wide variety of genres. FEFF celebrates everything from experimental to animation, narrative shorts to documentary features, and anything in-between. From large productions to those with no budget, all films are respected equally.

FEFF also exhibits a selection of films off-venue in the local businesses of Seyðisfjörður, ensuring optimal accessibility for the community to catch the program. This omnipresence of the festival content aids in the generation and persistence of valuable cultural dialogues taking place within the community beyond the theater walls.

Each year, FEFF invites up to ten filmmakers, five American and five Icelandic, to attend the festival. Through Q&A’s and open forum discussions, the filmmakers engage with one another and audiences, offering insights into their creative processes, values, and concerns of the sustainability of their art in a time of profound global turmoil. The intimate nature of the festival promotes an impressionable network of long-lasting collaborative relationships between the filmmakers and the community. With over 150 independent films screened and 30 filmmakers attended in its first three years, the festival has proven itself a powerful entity, igniting critical conversation on contemporary filmmaking- a creative medium which has withstood the test of time as one of the world’s greatest tools used to reflect the human values and crises of our world.

Flat Earth Film Festival is free to the public. Popcorn included with admission.
